Weight Loss Saga {Aug 1}

Let’s begin —

I’m recommitting to this whole weight loss/exercise thing for the month of Aug. I started the 3-Day Refresh and, well, I failed miserably. I made it through one day of the shakes before I ended up with a massive headache, no motivation, and the overwhelming urge to vomit every time I even thought about Shakeology. No bueno. I’m determined to finish them though, I paid for the system and I need to see it through but we’re about to get creative. Stay Tuned for these recipes…

However, all that aside:

Week 1: -2.7lbs

Yep. I’m actually down a little over two and a half lbs this week! I’ve been loosely following the 21-Day Fix approved foods list and watching my caloric intake on MFP. I haven’t, however, gotten any time to exercise, which needs to be incorporated. That is definitely becoming a priority in this next week.

The Hubs got me a FitBit Flex for my (extremely early) birthday gift and I like it a lot. I had a FitBit Zip for a short period of time but I found myself getting way too wrapped  up in it and not moving for the right reasons. This is a little more mindless which is really helping. That and I find myself taking random trips around work, just to get some steps in.

So for now –

Monthly Goals:

* Drop 8 lbs (4%)

* Work Out 5 Days a week

* Meet or exceed 10,000 steps per day, weekends included.

8 Days until the Charles St 12 (Half PR: 2:59:17) [I know I can’t count my Half PR against the 12 Miler but I’d like to complete this in 2:45 or less. I know that seems extreme but I’m hoping I can pull it off.]

44 Days until the 9/11 Run To Remember (PR: 32:59)

86 Days until the MCM10K (PR: 1:12)

100 Days until the 10K Across The Bay (PR: 1:12)

Back to the Grind

It’s been a month since we moved and while we aren’t settled in yet, E has a job that he really seems to enjoy (save the 98* heat every day), Beanie is loving her school and she simply amazes me with what she comes home and tells us she learned that day, and me — well, I’m employed. I’m not going to lie, I don’t love it. This a factory job and it doesn’t satisfy my craving to please people. I’m sucking it up though and moving forward.

It seems like everyone I know is jumping on on bandwagon of fitness and I’m all “HA! I’ve been on the wagon”, but I haven’t. Weight has snuck up and it’s being a menance to get off so I made the decision to recommit myself to getting this weight {back} off and keeping it off.

Ran another 6 miles this past Saturday, I was surprised at how easy it was coming back to me. I picked a route that would mimic the hills on the Charles St 12 course. Hopefully I can manage that one without dying. It’s coming up in 2 weeks and I’m horrificly under trained. My M.O….

I also committed to try the 3-Day Refresh  and the 21-Day Fix, both by Beach Body, which is where my Body Pump came from. I adore Body Pump. I actually feel like I’m doing something with this work out, not just a “blah blah blah” jumping around. I wish I could have two TVs in one room so I can play Pump on one screen and 30-Day Shred on the other. (i’m sure some Beach Body coach is cringing that I put Jillian Michaels in the same sentence but hey, the woman is a psychotic bitch but she can work out!). So I started Day 1 of the 3-Day Refresh.

I can’t choke the shit down! The chocolate Shakeology is like drinking dark chocolate syrup. I mixed it with almond milk (had to go dairy free) and I’m not sure if I didn’t use enough to what but wow. I got to the fiber drink and nope. Finished half before I gagged and had to stop. I think I could have chugged this except I didn’t mix it well enough. No one wants to chew their drinks. The Vanilla shake for lunch — I chugged that shit. I’m talking, I’ve taken shots of fireball slower than I chugged this drink. I’m going to try blending this with strawberries and a banana tomorrow and seeing if that can’t help any. I’m sticking with it because I paid A LOT for it I’m committed to trying this program and looking to see what results I can get.

Don’t worry, I’m not becoming a coach. I don’t have enough time in the day to remember where I put my child, let alone sell stuff. But I have an awesome coach, should any of my readers want to look deeper into any products 🙂

Marinated Baked Pork Chops

I’m a sucker for teriyaki type stuff so when I saw soy sauce, brown sugar, and worcestershire sauce, I thought this was a shoe it for love from the Coastie House.

Marinated Baked Pork Chops

I followed this recipe to a T, minus using 6 pork chops. I only had 4.

1T Soy Sauce

2T Veggie Oil

1T Worcestershire sauce

1t lemon juice

2T brown sugar

2T ketchup

4 Pork Chops (I use boneless, center cut. Usually on the thicker side)

Pre-Baking

Pre-Baking

The recipe called to bake it for 30 mins, flip, baste, and bake for 30 mins. That would turn these into hockey pucks so I baked for 25 mins total and dumped all the sauce over it.

Overall family opinion: they were better the second day. For some reason, the ketchup was very prominent in this recipe. It was BBQ-y enough for me and I liked it but I really tasted the ketchup, which I didn’t love. We had two chops the next day and they were definitely better. We may have this again but we’ll need to tweak the receipe some.

pork chop2The upside to this recipe is that it’s packed with protein, which is a plus considering how much time E and I spend in the gym. On to the next recipe, I suppose

Cheesy Stuffed Meatballs

We have a regular rotation of dinners and it seems to get a touch boring after a while. I’m always on the look out for new recipes that sound great and aren’t too terribly labor intensive to make.

I decided, for Feb, I wanted to do a various of “Julie & Julia”. Please don’t think I have any grand ideas of getting out Julia Childs’ cookbook and making Beef Wellington on a school night. But I would like to challenge myself to make 28 different dinners, not only to give my family some change, but also to enhance some cooking skills.

Allrecipes.com is one of my favorite go-to’s but I also see how people “share” a million and one recipes all over the facebook. You know the “share this on your wall so you can refer back!” posts. Yea. My mother is guilty of those but I can’t lie, I’ve tried a couple that she has posted.

Last night was Betty Crocker’s Cheese Stuffed Meatballs.

Now, I attempt to tweak recipes whenever I can to lessen the calories and make it a touch healthier. MFP has this recipe labeled as 850 cals per serving. I don’t know about you but that’s a LOT for one dinner so I needed to figre this out.

Cheese Stuffed Meatballs

Cheese Stuffed Meatballs

I used:

4 Sticks of Polly-O Mozzerella String Cheese (freeze for about an hour before using), cut into enough chunks for the number of meatballs you have

1 lb 80/20 ground beef (I find the less fat, the drier the meat and I don’t enjoy dried out ground beef)

1/2 C Parmesan Bread Crumbs

1T Minced Onion (I prefer the taste of the dried minced onion when I don’t have a fresh onion in the house)

2t Garlic Powder

1 whole egg

I mixed all ingredients together in  a bowl and made sure to distribute the dry ingredients.

meatballs 2

Out of the pound of meat, I was able to get 11 meatballs, each weighing 1.6 oz.

meatballs 3Take the cheese and stuff it into the meatball. You might need to cut more off the chunk to make it fit properly

meatballs 4Seal the meatballs around the cheese, as best you can. This definitely kicked my ass.

meatballs 5Bake at 350* for 10 mins and check them. I checked them at 10 mins and they needed a littler longer, in my opinion. I learned the hard way — next time I will be baking these on a rack with a drip pan underneath. I also learned that I need to work on sealing my balls (pause for *snickers*) because the cheese was oozing out.

meatballs 6

Case in point — oozy cheese.

Overall Family Opinion: “they’re good”. I agree with E, they were a little bland so I definitely need to beef up the seasonings within the actual meatball. I also think sealing them better and then putting the balls into the sauce would be helpful too. This will be put into the rotation and eaten again. It definitely didn’t take forever to make so it’s convenient for a weeknight meal.

Saying Goodbye

I’ve had to say good-bye more times than I may have like, but everyone can say that. And no matter how many times we have to do it – even if it’s for the greater good, it still stings. And although we will never forget what we’ve given up, we owe it to ourselves to keep moving forward. What we can’t do is live our lives afraid of the next good-bye because chances are they are not going to stop. The trick is to recognize when a good-bye can be a good thing – when it’s a chance to start again

This seemed to be the theme of my Thanksgiving.

My parents and IL’s ascended upon our home in Maine, after a horrid drive up from Maryland. I think it took them about 15 hours because the East Coast had a storm from VA to ME. Gross. It was a good time though. Beanie loved having her grandparents around and, of course, they spoiled her rotten. I’m already working on undoing all of the spoiling. Least favorite parental task ever.

Thanksgiving was a good day. The women-folk cooked while the men folk entertained Beanie. I don’t have any pics of the feast because, lets face it, we all eat the same crap. We know what it looks like and, unless you’re in a food competition, it’s not really fun to look at food.

The highlight of the day, though:

A Big Win!

A Big Win!

And despite Mike Tomlin and his devilish ways, we still came out on top. I really wish our defense would figure their nonsense out. I mean, we’re one of the top rated red zone defenses yet we consistenly flub at the end. But this was a good turning point for us. We’re in contention for a Wild Card spot and here’s hoping we can keep Purple Friday going through December and into the new year!

MIL and I walked the Turkey Trot on Black Friday. It wasn’t terrible for her first 5K. I took the stroller with Beanie. Beanie wasn’t impressed but to her defense, it was wicked cold out. 57 mins to walk it. I’m proud of MIL for this accomplishment. We definitely attempted to burn off some of the cals we took in on Thanksgiving LOL

My parents and I took Beanie to see Santa being brought in via CG boat. Our Station brings Santa into Rockland Harbor to visit, every year, and this year was no different. It attracts a pretty decent crowd and the community loves us for it.

(I have movies of both but go figure, my computer is being stupid.)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Another thing I had to say good bye too: My MFP streak.

434 days of tracking my food/caloric intake and exercise and I forgot to log in yesterday.

I FORGOT!

For 434 days, it was a way of life. I logged almost everything. But yesterday. Yesterday didn’t happen. To be completely honest, I was bummed this morning. But I’m looking at this as a new start. I’ve been slacking since I busted my ankle up before Halloween. I haven’t been working out, I’ve been slacking on the food logging, and my weight has be bouncing back and forth with the same 2 lbs. 2 lbs isn’t terrible but it’s the 2 lbs that is on the cusp of two weight classes. That’s what’s got me irritated. So I figure, fresh start, time to bring it and get these next 10 lbs off. Weigh ins for work are coming up mid/end of next month and I told myself, I won’t have to be taped this time. I want to get on the scale, show my peeps that I made the standard via weight, and move on with my life.

I also got an app that will have me working on speed work. It’ll have to be on the treadmill because we’re in our winter season. I love running outdoors but the thought of potentially running over ice has me less than thrilled. On super dry, sunny days, I’ll get a run in outdoors but for this new app (Running for Weight Loss PRO: Trainer. On special today for $3.99 which I think is a great deal considering most are $5.99 and up) I’ll be on the dreadmill.

I’m ready to face 2014 head on and move on.

March in the Rear View

Holy Crapola — Where did March go??

We went to MD to celebrate one of the nephew’s birthday but mainly we went to see E’s grandmother, who isn’t doing fantastically.

Beanie

How much older can she look? Where did my baby go?!

The trip was nice but it’s nice to be back “home” in ME. It was exhausting. Beanie’s first plane ride – she did amazing! We were lucky enough to get an open flight on Southwest Airlines and when we got to the desk, the attendants told us there were open seats so we could take her car seat on the plane with us and put her in it. PTL! We ran into some “groaners”. You know those people, the ones that groan as soon as they realize there is a kid on their flight. Funny enough, she slept before we even took off! We were even praised as people got off the plane, telling us that they were grateful for a peaceful flight with a toddler. The flight home was awesome, as well. A few blips (2 hour delay, no nap, her getting sick while we were flying) but all in all, it was a great trip.

She also found a new hobby. We were cooking dinner one night and I turned around, in a panic and realized she wasn’t around us. I yelled for her and I heard nothing. After a brief moment of “HOLY SHIT, I LOST THE SMALL CHLD IN THE HOUSE”, we heard a little snicker.

And then this:

I got a new HRM and began outdoor running again. Things have actually been going really well in the WLJ department. 3.5 miles this past wednesday and I’m getting ready to sign up for my first ever (YIKES!) 5K. I’m excited but nervous. I did 3.5 miles in 42 mins and walked less than a 1/4 of a mile so I’m hoping to pick up my speed and cut out the walk. I guess the treadmill has helped! I’m also down an entire pants size and 6 lbs. I’m still a ways away from my goal but I’m meeting my mini-goals and that makes me happy 🙂

E and I celebrated our 2 yr anniversary.

AnniversaryTwo years ago, we went to the church with 20 of our peeps (all family) and me being 14w knocked up and we said “I DO”. It was awesome for us. It’s been a crazy two years but there is no one else I’d rather be by my side on this crazy journey of a life!

My iPhone kicked my ass.

Spring

We welcomed the arrival of Spring. With a foot of snow. WHOMP WHOMP.

Bounce houseAnd we still had to play indoors. But seriously, how awesome are we? What other parents do you know that own a bounce house for their child, let alone put it in the basement for them to play in because it’s just too freakin cold outside?!

We rock!

The verdict came down: Beanie needed tubes for her ears. 5 EIs in 9 months were enough to convince the Ped and the ENT.

Loving the hospital jammies

Loving the hospital jammies

We have a trooper, y’all. She was a true champ during this procedure. She didn’t cry, she didn’t whine, she was truly awesomesauce!! She allowed the nurses to come in and wrap her up in the blanket and they walked away with her. E and I took it a lot better than we expected, as well. MIL came into town and PTL, she was awesome with us during this time. She helped with Beanie and just allowed us to chill, which we needed desperately.

It also helped that Beanie was acting like nothing ever happened. As seen here in Daddy's sweatshirt

MathMath is still kicking my ass but I’m maintaining a C average. I’m hoping to rock some tests to bring it to a solid B so I can definitely pass the class. It’s tough though. 13 yrs out of HS and trying to do this type of nonsense – it’s bullcrap.

All in all, things have been going well. I’ve had a bit of blogwriter’s block. Nothing major going on, things being incredibly busy, and us being utterly exhausted. I’ve managed to maintain my work outs, which is nice. Hopefully I can pick this back up. It’s not that I write to impress anyone, it’s more of an outlet and a catch up for family and friends who might have the address and want to see what’s up with us, now that we’ve moved.

My mom and sibling come to visit next weekend so I’m super excited!!

Hello March

The SIL is doing one of those POTD things on Instagram again and this one looked interesting so, once again, I’m copying catting her and doing it too.

Day 1: Up
My heart rate after a morning work out

We did a Deck of Death work out this morning, as a unit, and I tell you what — that’ll get your HR up and fast! Scale hasn’t budged but I’m on C25K W5D3 and still going strong. Here’s hoping for a breakthrough!

Next week is one of our nephew’s birthday’s so we decided to go to MD. In an effort to save money, we found a dog sitter and we’re flying. Problem is — this is our first plane ride as a family. I’m a trained professional. I used to live on planes when I was at my last unit. I’d hop all over the country and to Hawaii without a problem. Beanie — Never flown before. What the hell have I committed myself to?

None the less —

Flight has been booked!

I’m only two days into using this FitBit Zip but I love it! I find that I’m having a very hard time getting to 10,000 steps which I’m finding ways of working on. I love that I can sync it to my phone and see where I’m at and I really like that it’s so small, I don’t feel burdened with it on my persons. Obviously I’m working on calories burned, as well but I’m hoping with setting these goals, it’ll make me push even harder so I reach them.

However, all this working out and tracking has caused me to put my classes and school work on the back burner and that’s not good. Especially not when work is paying for them so if I don’t pass, I have to pay. YIKES!!

Weekend of Funk

The Plague has hit the Coastie House full force and it’s miserable. So far I’ve stuck to my No-Facebook Lent Resolution very well. I don’t even really miss it anymore. Some say I’m cheating because I’m still posting pics through Instagram but I don’t care. I’m not physically logging onto FB. The No-Fast-Food resolution is going well, also, but I’ll be breaking that when we drive to MD next month. I’m already trying to figure out where we can stop so I can get a non-fried, somewhat healthy for fast food item. Ugh.

This poor kid — she woke up Friday with a temp of 100.3* so she had to stay home from DC. We spent the day together and in all of her “I just want to do my own thing” ness, she got ahold of a box of tissues. This got really messy, really quickly.

I finally got my FitBit Zip. I haven’t had this an entire day yet but I’m stoked to see how it compares to my MFP. Plus, I’m liking the fact that I have a goal to meet re: steps taken. My goal is 10,000 steps. Hopefully this will get me to goal! I’m starting Week 4 of Couch-to-5K today so I’m sure that will net me some steps!

The {New} Weight Saga – Week 6

Total for the week: 0 lbs

Total for the 90-day Challenge: -3.3 lbs

Total for 2013: -3.3 lbs

Total miles logged to date: 32.2 miles

I’m plugging along with C25K and I have to say, I thought I was in for a gain this week. Last week’s big loss was purely due to the plague that I contracted from my asshole awesome coworkers and husband but this week, I was actually able to maintain that loss.

I’ll take it and be happy 🙂

In other news –We got SNOWED IN!

Thursday, we kept getting all these notifications of a winter storm warning. Now, living in Maine is a whole lot different than living in Maryland. Living in Maryland, people hear “SNOW” and immediately the grocery stores, Wal-Marts, Targets, and any gas station become completely void of all milk, toilet paper, and bread. People in Maine hear “SNOW” and they think “hmph, just another day in Maine.” Seriously. It snowed about 3.5′ yesterday and Friday and E still was able to go out and find a store that was not only open but had bread and milk (and Chex mix but that was a nice treat).

Friday was a volunteer day through work. Every year, the town of Camden holds the U.S. National Toboggan Championships.

I know, I didn’t know there was such a thing either.

E and I went to help out and got to go down the Toboggan chute.
